An Introduction to Organic Skincare

In the last few months, I have been making a conscious effort to organic when I can. I know it's not the most cost effective when it comes to the weekly grocery shop, but with particular fruits & vegetables there are compelling arguments as to why it's better for your health. With that being the case, I figured it was about time to take the same approach with my skin and give some new products a try. I fell for Saya's minimal, monochrome packaging immediately, but what's inside it even better. I caught up with the founder, Saya McDermott, to find out a little more about the benefits of going organic...

What was the inspiration between the creation of Saya?

The business grew very organically.  Living in tropical Noosa I found that there was a lack of natural products on the market to suit my problem skin, so I began to research natural alternatives. This inspired me to start formulating my own natural skincare and there began the creation of the products. I had a strong desire to create purely plant-based, organic skincare whilst respecting our beautiful environment and standing firmly against animal testing.

I know a lot of us love incorporating organic produce into our diets, what are the main benefits of going organic when it comes to skincare?

Your skin is actually your largest organ and just like feeding your body with natural organic food it’s just as important to nourish and protect your skin with organic products. In the past few years natural ingredients have massively progressed so that you can now attain results previously only achievable with synthetic ingredients. When skincare is accredited as organic it means you are buying a product that contains the highest quality ingredients able to be sourced, which are the most active and potent.

You're based in beautiful Noosa, does being by the ocean inspire and inform your products?

Yes, very much so. Living on the Sunshine Coast we’re naturally always out enjoying the sunshine, however the sun is the biggest cause of premature ageing. It can be super damaging and harmful, so with this in mind all of our products in the range are formulated with a high potency of skin protective, repairing and nourishing ingredients that help reduce these effects.

For those of us starting out, what are the key products to invest in for formulating a new skincare routine?

Exfoliate: It keeps your skin looking and feeling fresh and flawless as well as promoting the effectiveness of your daily moisturiser.  I am a big believer in using a face exfoliant with Alpha Hydroxy Acids. AHA's are effective in breaking down and removing surface dead skin cells. As we age cell renewal slows down, using products with AHA's helps stimulate this natural process and also stimulates collagen. Our AHA Face exfoliants contains a blend of Alpha Hydroxy Acids from botanical sources (Bilberry, Sugar Cane, Sugar Maple, Orange and Lemon). These extracts are rich in Lactic, Glycolic, Citric, Malic and Tartaric acids. This complex maximises the ability to stimulate cell turnover, while minimising a potential irritation.  When choosing an exfoliant for your skin always make sure you stay away from any containing microbeads, they’re terrible for the environment.
Moisturse: even if you have oily skin. Either a cream based or a pure oil works best. It’s so important to moisturise as it helps hydrate and protect your skin from moisture loss. If you prefer a cream based moisturiser I highly recommend choosing one that has hyaluronic acid, which is a marvellous little molecule that has an incredible ability to retain moisture… also look for ingredients naturally rich in antioxidants, which help protect the skin and neutralize free radical damage.
I also really love using oils at the moment, especially my Argan oil with Kakadu plum, this skin nourishing and silky smooth oil, is naturally rich in Vitamin E and essential fatty acids. It's a non-comedogenic oil meaning it won't clog your pores.
What are some of the main active ingredients to look for?

Our face range contains our signature blend of Australian Native Botanicals (Crown of Gold, Illawarra Flame Tree and Blue Jacaranda). These botanicals contain a host of antioxidants that help to strengthen skin and support healthy skin function. Some other key ingredients incorporated in our face range are hyaluronic acid, which restores moisture and provides lasting hydration. Kakadu Plum, one of the richest known natural sources of Vitamin C and Alpha Hydroxy Acid, that promotes smoother, younger looking skin by increasing the rate of cell turnover.

Your packaging is so beautiful, and I love that it ticks all the boxes when it comes to being environmentally friendly. Is this conscious approach always at the core of what you do?

We are conscious of the footprint that we make. Our packaging in not only environmentally friendly, it also increases the longevity of the product.
