Elevated Basics: My Go-To Guide

A slightly different take on everyday wardrobe essentials

If, like me, you live in jeans, tees and cosy sweaters, you might find yourself occasionally wondering how to dress things up a little bit, while still maintaining your comfort level. Whether it's going from lunch to the airport, or from my home office to an after-work drink, I'm all about ways to feel together while secretly knowing that sans heels, I could also curl up and take a sneaky nap.

If you're thinking about where to start, these are my key elevated basics to invest in:

1.  The Soft Trench
The trench is a classic shape, and in either black, tan or navy will always stand the test of time in your wardrobe. Look for a soft, slightly lighter weight jacket which packs down easily and can be worn all year round.

2. The Updated Sweater
Look for a pullover that uses high quality fibres, I like wool, cashmere or alpaca, and then an interesting cut or detailing which makes it a cut above the rest This particular style features an asymmetrical hem and ribbed edges for a refreshing take on your usual jumper. And it's super comfortable too, of course.

3. Detailed Trousers
You can't go wrong with a great pair of skinnies, and while I have a great foundation of classic staples, I love to look for subtle details and new fabrications which can make some pairs a little more special. J Brand recently re-released their coveted Houlihan style featuring cargo detailing, zip ankles and a cotton blend which feels amazing on.

4. The Silk Tee
A well-cut, soft cotton t-shirt in grey, black and white is a closet essential, so why not invest in a similar cut, with a new fabrication. Silk t-shirts feel amazing to wear and look great with just about anything, it’s a very easy way to dress up denim too.

5. The Luxe Heel
Everyone needs a classic black pump in their wardrobe, but there is also a lot to be said for a detailed, slightly more luxurious version of your everyday black heels. I decided to commit to this Givenchy style after finding them on sale. What I love most is that they are simple enough to wear season after season, but the lock detailing on the ankle strap makes them stand out.
